Wood Doll
Wood dolls are the oldest of the collectible dolls. They are often English, and usually hand-carved with painted features. Because they are so old, they are only rarely found in an acceptable state, and thus can be worth thousands or tens of thousands of dollars when found in even fair condition.
Wood dolls from England made in the eighteenth and
nineteenth century are commonly known as Queen Ann dolls despite the fact that
Queen Anns reign was much earlier. Like most dolls from this era, they were
shaped like an adult and dressed in clothing that was stylish at the time. In the nineteenth century, German wooden
dolls became popular as well, including Peg Wood dolls and Grodner Tal dolls.
These remain particularly valuable collectors items in modern times,
especially among people who know their rich history.
