Cloth Doll
There was a time when doll collectors had no interest in
cloth dolls, but that era has passed. Unique and distinctive, cloth dolls have
more character than their china and bisque counterparts and have been known to
sell for as much money as a new car. Because they are made of a more delicate
material, collectors expect imperfections and markings on even good condition
dolls. The fragile nature of cloth dolls makes them rarer than antique dolls of
other materials, and therefore more valuable.
Although there are several famous makers of cloth dolls,
such as Izannah Walker and Norah Wellings, handmade dolls of unknown origin are
also valuable and prized as folk art. Vintage Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls are
also collectible, more so if they have a manufacturer’s mark. Cloth dolls in
original packaging or with original era clothing are especially valuable. The
more unusual a cloth doll and its clothing, the more it will be worth on the
collector’s market.
