China Doll
A lasting favorite among toy lovers, china dolls are made of
glazed porcelain and have a characteristic shiny appearance that is
recognizable by any collector. Most popular from the 1830’s through the early
twentieth century, china dolls were made most commonly in Germany and France.
China dolls are collector’s items recognized by any antique collector. Because of their unique shiny appearance, they are easy for even a beginner to identify. “Low brow” china dolls, called this because of the way their bangs cover their brows, were mass made during the Victorian era and can be bought in good condition for just a few dollars. China dolls in general are especially valuable if they have an unusual hairstyle, original period doll clothing, or any other special features that set them apart from the mass produced dolls of their era. Rare china dolls can be worth thousands of dollars, especially if manufactured by a famous maker.
