Doll houses were originally meant to amuse wealthy adults. Upper class men and women in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries took pride in creating beautiful miniature houses with the same quality furniture and accessories as their own mansions. These adult amusements of yesteryear have become the most coveted antique doll houses of today.

As these now-antique dollhouses gained popularity, they began to be made for children as well. In addition to tiny furniture, tiny dolls were created to live in these miniature scale mansions. By the nineteenth century, dollhouses were an item for the nursery.
